OVER MY HEAD’s Latest Review!

I just got back home from a four-day visit to Florida for a family wedding, feeling a little tired and a bit overfed, when I opened an email that really perked me up…

Seems that Australian book blogger Agrippina Legit has just posted a review of my YA novel Over My Head. As with any review posting, I found myself holding my breath when I first gave it a read. But I quickly found myself grinning!

The review starts with this:

“Although Over My Head is really a sequel to Marie Lamba’s What I Meant (Random House), it reads perfectly as a stand alone novel… It’s an entertaining contemporary YA offering, which has a generally light tone but nonetheless manages to deal with some very big issues in a particularly sensitive manner.”

And the blogger’s review ends with this:

Over My Head is a strong contemporary offering, with an interesting, multi-layered plot and a likeable cast of characters. Marie Lamba deals with cultural conflicts with warmth and sympathy, while accurately representing young love, with all its accompanying mistakes and embarrassments. A solid read.”

So great!

If you want to read her complete in-depth review, you can visit the book blog review by clicking here.

Hope you’ll check out this review, share it with others, and, of course, check out Over My Head.

Happy reading,
Marie

On the Radio!

Me? Not!

When I was a teen I’d dreamed of this moment. The moment I’d be on the radio with people actually listening…

Well, okay, the dream was a bit different, and it went like this: I was just some ordinary kid hidden away in some ordinary suburban basement belting out songs I was listening to on my record player (yes, vinyl records…).  But wait! Someone walking by hears me. Thinks, yes, this is the unusual voice everyone’s been looking for. That someone, of course, is a famous producer, and I, of course, am discovered.

Dream come true?

Well, maybe not. But I WAS on the radio last night, and, lucky for you, I wasn’t singing. And I was contacted by a producer. That happened on Tuesday. See? My Magic 8 Ball was right all along.

Here’s what happened. Over at the Liars Club blog I had done a post about the Collingswood Book Festival in NJ (which is tomorrow, and is free…come visit!), and NPR radio station WHYY was interested in talking about the fest and the panel my group the Liars Club was doing there on the revolutionary changes in today’s publishing.

So, presto! By Wednesday I was on a train into Philly to do the interview.  Then sitting at the WHYY studios across from the very kind Newsworks Tonight host Dave Heller, who did not make me feel in the least bit nervous.  And, I’m happy to report, I did not knock over that overly full styrofoam cup of water they’d set out in front of me.  (I’m convinced they put it there as a test of some sort. I immediately slid the cup far far away from me, averting certain radio disaster, short-circuited wires, shooting flames, things like that.)

We talked about what it’s like to get published these days, about the growth of independent publishing, about the Liars Club, about how I write and why I do what I do. I also chatted a little about my books, including a bit about my newest upcoming novel DRAWN.

It was such a fun experience, and last night the show aired, and THAT’S when I got nervous. Seriously nervous. What if I’d misspoke? What if I sounded like a tool? Well, you can judge for yourself, and let me know what you think.

*To listen to the interview, just click here.

Thanks for having me, Newsworks Tonight. And thanks (from everyone) for not asking me to sing.

Some Stories about Me

Hey gang,

Some stories are circulating about me on blogs and in the news, and I thought you should hear it from me first…

Okay, so that’s just my juicy author voice plotting drama for you.  Truth is, there are a few great blog sites that have just featured interviews with me, and an article you can also get to online.  The fun part is, each interviewer has asked me completely different questions.

Things get a bit personal!
Find out some stuff about my home life by clicking on the REM blog. Author Jessica M. Cooper asks me about what it’s like to be a writer and a mom. The guilt, the story-stealing (from their lives), the layers of dust in my house, etc.

Jessica is a writing mom too, and she has recently completed a very cool young adult paranormal novel with the working title: REM.

How I hit rock bottom, revealed!
At author Jennifer Hubbard’s blog, I share the struggle of writing and publishing my second novel, and some seriously messed up things that happened along the way. Check it out here.  In this guest post I talk candidly about my crazy and VERY rocky road toward publishing my newest young adult novel OVER MY HEAD.  You’ll get some serious behind the scenes info.

Jennifer Hubbard is author of the wonderful YA THE SECRET YEAR (Viking), and you can look for her second novel TRY NOT TO BREATHE  in January 2012!

And this One’s a Little too Close to Home!
Why do I write about my hometown? Why do I write for teens? Well? What do I have to say for myself? Over at the Warrington and Doylestown PATCH sites, writer Beverly Black did a great interview where she asked me about why I set my two novels WHAT I MEANT… and OVER MY HEAD in Doylestown, and about advice I have for aspiring authors. Check all that out here.

That’s the news for now. And remember, if you see anything about me in the tabloids, you can’t believe everything you read. It’s FICTION!

Book Launch Party August 5th – Dive in!

Join me as I launch my newest title Over My Head out into the world! We’ll be throwing a huge book launch party on Friday, August 5th at the wonderful independent Doylestown Bookshop in Doylestown, PA from 7-9 p.m. The party is free and open to everyone.

Books will be signed. Snacks will be nibbled. I’m planning on having giveaways from the many local shops that are featured in the novel (more details about these in a later post).  And, if the stars align, I’m also hoping to have some lifeguards from Fanny Chapman Swimming Pool on hand to add to the beach party feel of things!

For those of you who don’t know, in Over My Head the main character Sang, a senior at CB West High, falls for a 20-year-old lifeguard from the Fanny pool.  And she doesn’t know if he’s the love of her life or a player out to break her heart. So, yeah, lifeguards with whistles at the party. That’s part of the plan. Hopefully without the heartbreak!

Should be a great time. Especially since it’s part of the town’s First Friday celebration. That means there is going to be tons of free entertainment along the streets of the town. It’s like all of Doylestown will be celebrating 🙂

Ah, there’s something about a book launch. It’s different than any other signing an author does, because for the very first time you are signing a brand new novel for readers. This is the first time I get to see people’s reaction to the cover, and I get to watch their expressions as they flip through the pages. It’s unnerving in a way, but mostly wonderful and exciting. For the first time, I get to see someone actually holding my book. I get to go to bed that night knowing that people will be reading my words and that the story that was stuck in my head for so long will come alive in a reader’s head now too. SHIVERS!

So come see me and be a part of this celebration. For more info, or if you would like to reserve a copy of Over My Head in advance, you can call the bookshop at 215-230-7610.

Here’s to making a huge SPLASH!

Over My Head on Sale!!!!!!

It’s summer. And high school senior Sang Jumnal is in way over her head.

Now you can be too!  HUZZAH!!!!!   My new novel Over My Head is now officially on sale in print ($12.99) and in ebook ($2.99).  To find out how to snag your own copy, just click here.

The book (a perfect beach read if I must say so myself) picks up two years after What I Meant… ends.  It’s the start of summer before Sang’s senior year in Doylestown, PA, and nothing goes as planned.  Sang definitely doesn’t plan on falling for 20-year-old lifeguard Cameron Cerulli. And she can’t tell if he’s the love of her life or a player out to break her heart. Serious Trouble.

So dive on in for some summertime fun, and enjoy.  As for me? I’ll be busy setting up a huge beachy book launch party (details coming soon), and generally working hard to spread the word everywhere.  But I just wanted to take a minute (and a deep breath) and share the happy news with you all.  My. Book. Is. Finally. Out!

Fist pump.  Heel click. Yessssss!

As always, thanks so much to you all for supporting this wacky writer and her work. It really means a lot. ❤

Marie

Congrats!

OVER MY HEAD will be published in the next week or so, and I’ll definitely announce that here.  It’ll be a $12.99 paperback and a $2.99 e-book.

In the meantime…For your glimpse at chapter one, click here.

And enjoy!

New Cover Revealed!

This is it!!!! The cover for my new novel Over My Head.  I’m so excited, I’m a little nuttier than usual. (Happy dance…) Designed by Cheryl Perez, this cover exactly captures the summery fun and romance and intrigue I was looking for. Thanks so much, Cheryl!

Over My Head is a summertime novel that starts on the last day of Sang Jumnal’s junior year in high school.  It’s been 2 years since What I Meant… wrapped up, and Sang is a little bit older, a little bit wiser, but nothing prepares her for what’s coming.  Dalton and Gary are on the scene, but when Sang meets 20-year-old lifeguard Cameron Cerulli at the Doylestown pool, she finds herself falling big time.  Cameron is either the guy of her dreams or a player out to stomp on her heart.

Sang is teetering on the brink of true love. Will she sink or swim?

Look for this novel to come out VERY SOON on kindle and nook and smashwords, and in print.  You’ll get the news first right here!

Let me know what you think of the cover.  Love to hear from you guys…

Dating Quiz!!!

Okay, I know you’ve been sitting around saying to yourself, self? When it comes to dating, which character in WHAT I MEANT… am I most like? Which guy would I end up with?  And what can I learn from all of this anyway?

Well, wonder no more!  I’ve just created a quiz over at Goodreads made just for you.  So take it and see what you think, and share it with all your friends to see where they fall in the grid.  Will you both be competing for Jason?  Will you give Dalton a chance? Is your dating style like Megan Chung’s? Gulp.

Take the Dating Style Quiz — Which WHAT I MEANT…Character Are You? And all answers shall be revealed. If you believe in this sort of thing.  And, if you have a Magic 8 Ball, I know you DO.

Have fun with this!

Psst! Secrets…Pass it on!

It's a secret...so tell everyone!

Hey gang, just wanted to let you in on a few secrets…

First of all, I’ll soon be revealing the cover for my new young adult novel OVER MY HEAD.   Look for this, and for the book to be coming out in June!  Very excited.

This novel picks up two years after WHAT I MEANT… finishes, and you’ll get to hang out with Sang, Megan, Dalton, Gary, Doodles and some new characters the summer before senior year as Sang falls big time for the one guy everybody thinks is wrong for her.

And for the many of you who have read WHAT I MEANT… and have asked me, “What happened to Gina? Why did she act like that?”…well, I’m putting the finishing touches right now on a short story that will soon appear in an anthology including stories written by the wonderful authors of The Liars Club.  I can tell you the anthology will be called LIAR, LIAR!  I can tell you that Gina is running from something, and hasn’t been entirely honest with Sang. And I can tell you the story will be called, “What I Did…”  And I can tell you that I can’t tell you much more just yet.  But I will. Soon. Honest.

Look for details, including when and how to purchase LIAR, LIAR! as well as OVER MY HEAD on this site. Soon. Cross my heart.

In the meantime, like all good secrets…Shhh! (And be sure to pass it on.)
